This is an excellent course to study if you enjoy working with people. It is a practical, skills based programme that will prepare you for employment in the health, social care and early years sectors.
It also provides a good grounding for the Level 3 programmes we offer in the department, such as the Diploma in Child Care and Education or the Level 3 National Certificate/Diploma in Health Social Care and Early Years Care, should you wish to progress.
You will cover a number of units which will include:
Mandatory units:

Unit 2: Communicating with service users in care
settings
Unit 3: Practical caring
Unit 4: Hygiene and safety in care settings
And optional units such as:
Unit 5: Health care for children
Unit 7: Development and care of young children
Unit 8: Preparing to work with young children
Unit 12: Nutrition and cooking for health
Unit 13: Creative activities in care settings
Special entry requirements
Normally 4 GCSEs at grade D or a Level 1 Health and Social Care at Merit grade, although a pass may be accepted in some circumstances
The ability to manage your time effectively and meet deadlines will be important
Good personal skills are also essential when dealing with client groups, other professionals and your colleagues
How you will learn
Through a variety of learning opportunites ranging from class based lessons, small and large group activities/
presentations, listening to visiting speakers, attending conferences, class discussion, not to mention work based experience, research and one-to-one tutorials.
You will be taught in a mixed class of approximately 20 students by teachers who are specialists in their field and have a real passion for their subject area.
How you will be assessed
You will study six units in all. All units are coursework based, internally assessed and externally verified. Assessment will include a variety of methods such as role plays, practical assessment and written work as well as demonstrating skills through workplacement experience.
There will be some practical work though it will depend very much on the unit being studied. Some units are very practical and skills based, whilst others may involve research in the community.
You will have two work placements, each lasting one week, throughout the year.
Other complementary subjects
This will very much depend on your career aspirations! If you wish to progress onto a higher level course, you will concentrate on acquiring Level 2 in Literacy and Numeracy, as well as, possibly, another GCSE such as Biology.
What you can do after this course
Most students use the Level 2 course as a base for further study or progression onto Level 3 programmes in Health and Social Care and Early Years or the Diploma in Child Care and Education. Other level 3 courses will be available.
