The GCE in Health and Social Care allows students to build skills as well as technical knowledge. It gives a broad base of understanding whilst allowing them to focus on specialist areas
Entry RequirementsStudents should hold one of the following qualifications:

Course Content
Year One - Double Award AS GCE
1. Human Growth and Development

This unit will develop knowledge and understanding of patterns of human growth and development, with an exploration of the key aspects of growth and development and the experience of health and well-being.

2. Communication and Values

This unit gives the student an understanding of the importance of communication in all caring activities, and about values involved in care. Learning about the value base of care and the transmission of values through communication.

3. Positive Care Environment

Knowledge gained in this unit enables the student to understand that positive care practice relies on practioners having a comprehensive understanding of the diverse society we live in, and that the promotion of a care value base can enhance service users opportunities in accessory services.

4.Social Aspects and Lifestyle Choices

Knowledge from this unit will help the student understand the importance of social factors in effective health and social care practice. They will develop an understanding of how social factors can affect a service user and how these factors impact on care practice.

5.Activities for Health and Well-Being

This unit investigates activities in health and care settings. Considering different types of activities, their benefits and their value in terms of health and well-being.

6.Public Health

The public health field focuses on factors that effect the health and well-being of large populations of people. Students consider the impact that social and economic factors amd lifestyle choices have on the health status of populations and communities within the UK.
Year Two - Double Award Advanced GCE.

7.Meeting Individual Needs

This unit will focus on how services are tailored to meet individual needs, through the use of care plans and on the importance of working in a multi-disciplinary environment.

8.Promoting Health and Well-Being

This unit will develop knowledge and understanding of promoting health and well-being. Researching why health promotion campaigns are carried out and how topics and target groups are identified.

9.Investigating Disease

This unit covers the disease process including the biological basis of disease, the ways in which a diagnosis may be made, the availability of treatment, the factors that may influence the outcome of the treatments, the strategies for preventing the spread or occurence of the disease and epidermological methods for tracking disease.

10.Using and Understanding Research

Research awareness is increasingly important in the health and social care field because of the emergence of evidence based care practice.
Research now plays a key part in developing and improving health and social care policies, service provision and care interventions.

11.Social Issues and Welfare Needs

Knowledge from this unit will help the student understand the variety of social issues and welfare needs, which exist in society, investigating social issues which have existed for many years and those which are more contemporary. They will explore how social issues and welfare needs impact on service users in different health and social care settings.

12.Understanding Human Behaviour

In this unit the student will gain knowledge and understanding of how human behaviour is understood and applied to health and social care practice, the influences on behaviour and the effects that can result. How theories of behaviour can be used in health and social care practice to make sense of the way that people behave, think and feel.

How will I be assessed?
In both the Double Award A's GCE and Double Award Advanced GCE qualification four units are internally assessed through assignments and two units are externally assessed through written examinations.
What can I do next?
The GCE in Health and Social Care qualifies for UCAS points. It gives students a wide choice of progression options into further study, training or relevant employment.
Students who successfully complete the qualification will be well equipped to move onto degrees or equivalent.
