About this course

There are no formal entry requirements for the NVQ although candidates must be working with service users or carers. Basic literacy and oral communication skills are necessary and the uke learning assessor must also be confident that the learner is able to generate the evidence necessary to achieve the qualification.

Programme Summary

Health and Social Care services for adults and children are highly regulated. This means you need to have the right qualification if you are working in a hospital, residential home or day care setting. The Health and Social Care NVQ is a nationally recognised and flexible qualification based on industry standards, available at 3 levels and aimed at those who deliver direct health and social care with a focus on the development and maintenance of independence, and hands-on care to support physical and emotional daily living needs.

Day to day work tasks will provide opportunities for recognition for candidates and in particular, the programme emphasises the development and enhancement of those practical skills necessary to provide high levels of care for personal and physical care needs and the support of recreational, developmental and therapeutic activities

Programme Content

The programme is unit based and candidates must complete six units in total to successfully complete the qualification. There are four mandatory units and candidates must choose an additional two units from a wide variety of available optional units to reflect their own work experience and organisational needs.

Mandatory Units

• Communicate with and complete records for individuals

• Support health and safety of yourself and individuals

• Develop your knowledge and practice

• Ensure your own actions support the care, protection and well-being of individuals


Optional Units

• Carry out and provide feedback on specific plan of care activities

• Support individuals to access and use information

• Support individuals in their daily living

• Support individuals to make journeys

• Support individuals to meet their domestic and personal needs

• Support individuals to access and participate in recreational activities

• Support individuals to take part in development activities

• Support individuals during therapy sessions

• Provide food and drink for individuals

• Help individuals to eat and drink

• Help individuals to keep mobile

• Help address the physical comfort needs of individuals

• Undertake agreed pressure area care

• Support individuals with their personal care needs

• Support individuals to manage continence

• Maintain the feet of individuals who have been assessed as requiring help with general foot care

• Assist in the administration of medication

• Support individuals prior to, during and after clinical procedures

• Contribute to moving and handling individuals

• Observe, monitor and record the condition of individuals

• Support individuals to undertake and monitor their own health care

Assessment Process

Each unit is assessed through the observation and questioning of normal activities within the workplace and the development of a portfolio within which learners collect electronic, paper and witness statement evidence that they have covered the skills/knowledge required for the unit. Candidates must apply knowledge and understanding of their work practices to the principles contained within each unit. Learners are also required to create reflective accounts of their work for inclusion in the portfolio.

Length of Programme

We support learners and set standards to enable participants to achieve targets and personal goals at an agreed pace. All learners are supported by a dedicated uke learning assessor who provides advice, guidance and support in the workplace throughout the duration of the programme.
