Heating with Wood
HEATING WITH WOOD LOGS, PELLETS OR CHIPS - WHICH ONE FOR ME?

There is a growing resurgence in the use of wood as a fuel for heating in rural areas. Automated wood heating systems can provide the convenience and reliability of fossil fuel boilers with far less environmental impact. New wood fuel types have also been developed offering greater convenience and reliability.

COURSE OUTLINE
Day 1
1600 onwards: arrival. Please ask at reception or in the restaurant for directions to your room.
1800 Supper in restaurant.
1900 Introduction to CAT and course overview. Presentation: 'Wood heating in an environmental context.'

Day 2
0830 Breakfast in restaurant
0930 Presentation: Why burn wood for heat?
Presentation: Suitable buildings for wood heating.
Presentation: Wood fuel types.
1100 Coffee in restaurant.
1130 Presentation: How wood burns and moisture content.
Practical: Measuring and estimating moisture content - preparing and drying samples.
1300 Lunch (packed).
1330 Site visits. Demonstration: log and pellet boiler, accumulator and plumbing.
1530 Tea (forest-style).
1600 Demonstration: log and briquette preparation, splitting and storage, tree species, log stove and plumbing. Lighting wood fires. Estimation of land area for log wood heating.
1700 Presentation: wood-burning appliances.
1800 Supper in restaurant.
1900 Presentation: Chimney, flues and hearths. Safety with wood burning.

Day 3
0830 Breakfast in restaurant.
0930 Presentation: Heating system sizes and plumbing layouts.
1100 Coffee.
1130 Presentation: grant schemes, regulations, finding fuel, equipment and installers.
Demonstration: wood chip boiler and heat main, wood pellet boiler and plumbing.
Demonstration: wood pellet stove, boiler and flue.
1300 Lunch.
1400 Final Q&A and project advice. Practical: results of moisture content experiment.
