What skills will I need and be developing during the course?
The study of History will not only enable you to acquire knowledge about the past, it will also help you to develop a range of transferable skills which universities and employers value highly. It:
  • encourages a critical and questioning outlook, helping you to think for yourself;
  • improves your research skills;
  • develops your ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and on paper;
  • stimulates your interest in moral debates and arguments;
  • promotes the skills necessary for independent study and effective group work.
During the course there will be a conscious attempt to help you develop these skills and individual support will be available if and when necessary.

How is the Course assessed?
Assessment is identical for both the Early Modern and Modern History courses.

AS - Year 1
Both units will be assessed by written examinations.

A2 - Year 2
Unit 3 will be assessed by written examination. Unit 4 is coursework.

What career opportunities are there?
History is a valuable qualification not only for teachers of the subject, librarians, and archivists, but also for many other careers, including law, administration, management and business. Many History graduates go on to become accountants or to work in computing.

...and what else?
  • The department has many up-to-date books, magazines and other resources.
  • There are many opportunities to make use of IT, including software packages, CD ROMs and the Internet.
  • Visits to sites of historical importance can be arranged.
  • We have close links with other educational institutions and organisations. If you are interested in Archaeology, for example, we can help you become involved in local digs organised by the Scarborough Archaeological and Historical Society.
