History A Level - Level 3 Overview

A better knowledge and understanding of the past is an excellent way to get a clearer view of today's events - and that's what makes our A Level History course such a compelling area of study.

You will tackle a wide range of British, European and world history, allowing you to understand how modern society and government has been shaped by the past. You will learn how important history is in determining modern identity, culture and lifestyle.

The examining body for the History A Level is AQA. First year modules include USA: 1865-1920 and modern Britain: 1951-1979, and second year modules include an independent coursework investigation, USA: 1920-80 and modern Britain: 1979-2007.

Entry requirements

You must possess five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English language or English literature (or combined English), and a minimum of a C grade in history or a humanities subject such as geography or law.

You will need to attend an interview with the tutor before being accepted on to the course.

The table below shows you when the course starts. You may be charged a fee for your course depending on your age and circumstances. If you are aged 24 or over and studying a qualifying Level 3, 4 or 5 course you may be able to apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan to cover the costs.

How will I be assessed?

This course is assessed primarily by examination scheduled for May/June with some additional coursework assessment. A personal study on the topic of your choice will account for 20% of your A Level grade.

What does the course lead to?

A knowledge of history is vital for a career in politics, local government, law, archaeology or the media. The research skills you will develop can be transferred to a variety of different careers and job types.

What will I study?

The core units will range from American involvement in Vietnam and Korea to Modern British History, Russia and the USA from 1890-1945.

Study programmes

It is an entry requirement for some courses to have gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths (see entry requirements). If the entry requirements to a course do not require A*-C in these subjects, and you haven’t already gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths before joining us, you will continue to study English and maths as part of your programme and take appropriate qualifications in these subjects with the aim of achieving A* to C grade. In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, every student aged under 19 and studying a full-time course at college will take part in our study programmes alongside their main subject qualification. What can I go on to study?

An A Level in history will offer a route into university to study at degree level. The options are wide ranging and include courses such as international studies, media and communication, journalism and art history.

How do I apply?

You don’t need to apply for each subject area you are interested in. Once we have received your application form we will invite you into college for an interview or audition where we will be able to discuss every aspect of the course you have chosen, as well as any alternatives you may be considering. You will also have the opportunity to visit the areas of the college used for your programme choice.
