AS Level

What's it all about?:
Free* Netbook computer for every new full-time AS level student
History is less a mere listing of dates, battles and political events and more a celebration of the past. Consider it a neat form of time travel, where you not only get to appreciate the big events but also get brilliant glimpses into ancient minds. Our course will train you to think and process information as if you too were there, so you will appreciate the constraints, the pressures and the moods of the period. Interestingly, learning about history will give you more profound understanding of the present.

The A level history course is will appeal to you if:
  • you are naturally curious about the world's places, peoples and environments
  • you like asking questions and finding answers
  • you are interested in politics, and social or cultural issues
  • you have the ability to think independently.

  • *Subject to conditions

Progression:

An A level in History is useful for students wishing to pursue a wide range of careers including: the law, education, the civil service, business and industry (more leaders in industry have history degrees than any other subject), politics (Gordon Brown has a history degree). An A Level in History attracts UCAS points for those wishing to enter higher education, and is highly rated by the top universities.

Duration: One year Course Overview
What does the course involve?:

The AS year comprises two units:
  • Unit 1: Russia and Germany 1871-1914 - a study of political, economic and social change in two of the most important countries in Europe between 1871 and 1914. Both countries were adapting to the social and economic pressures of change in the late 19th century, whilst maintaining autocratic political systems. Both Germany under the Kaiser and Tsarist Russia were major players on the international scene, and both were heavily implicated in the origins and outbreak of the First World War, which will also be studied. Both countries fell to extremist political parties after defeat in WW1. Study of this module will enable tyou to gain an appreciation of how the failure of political systems to adapt to social and economic pressures can lead to revolution and historical change.
  • Unit 2: THE USA and Vietnam 1961-1975 - the study of the most important conflict in modern American history. The module will set the Vietnam War in the context of US foreign and defence policy during the Cold War, and examine how the USA was drawn into Vietnam, only later to be forced to withdraw. The internal situation in Vietnam and the anti-war movement in the USA will help to inform these core issues. The module will show how war and conflict can divide and weaken the most powerful nation on earth.

The A2 year comprises two units:
  • Unit 3: Britain 1951-2007 - a study of modern British political, social and economic history. Key themes will include the extent of political consensus after 1951, the end of consensus and the impact of the 'Thatcher revolution'. Social change will be explored through race and class issues, and the growth of multiculturalism, allowing a study of equality and diversity in modern British society. Political and social change will be underpinned by study of economic factors, from the long post-war boom through the stagnation of the 1970s, the neo-liberal economic policies of Margaret Thatcher and an assessment of the extent of recovery by 2007.
  • Unit 4: Coursework - the coursework module is also the synoptic module, in which you will be expected to show an understanding of change over a 100 year time period. The focus is on change in eastern and central Europe, from its domination by the European Empires such as the Russian, Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires, prior to 1914, through the cataclysmic changes brought on by two world wars and the impact of authoritarian and extremist regimes, leading to domination by the Soviet Empire until 1989. The emergence of the 'New Europe' and the impact of the European Union will complete the module.
