HISTORY (HL/SL)

International Baccalaureate

This course is offered as part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. You will take 3 Higher Level subjects and 3 Standard Level subjects and complete components in Theory of Knowledge, Creativity Action Service and an Extended Essay.

Course overview

The course of study will give you the opportunity to study aspects of European and international history in the late 19th and 20th centuries. A key feature will be the emphasis on internationalism. It will require you to make comparisons between similar and dissimilar solutions to common human situations through the selected themes, i.e. peacekeeping and international relations, causes, practices and effects of wars, origins and development of authoritarian and single-party states.

The course consists of:

Paper 1:

Peacemaking, peacekeeping international relations 1918-1936

Paper 2:

1. Causes, practices and effects of wars

2. Origins and development of authoritarian and single-party states or democratic states challenges and responses

Paper 3:

Imperial Russia, revolutions, emergence of Soviet State 1853-1924
European diplomacy and the First World War 1870-1923
Inter-war years conflict and co-operation 1919-1939

How you will learn

You will learn through class discussions, group and pair work, and activities arising from a variety of source material. Much of the work involves discussion and debate on important issues of interest to students, so you need to be open-minded and able to appreciate the views of others, as well as expressing your own ideas. Visits will be arranged both within the UK and in Europe.

How you will be assessed

External Assessment: 2 hours 30 mins

HL and SL:

Paper 1 - 1 hour

Three prescribed subjects and four short-answer/ structured questions.

Paper 2 - 1 hour 30 mins

Five topics and two extended-response questions.

For HL only:

Paper 3 - 2 hours 30 mins

Three extended-response questions.

Internal Assessment: 20 hours

For both SL and HL:

Historical investigation on any area of the syllabus.
