History is a thought-provoking subject which stimulates academic discussion and debate, enabling students to develop and broaden their analytical skills. You will develop an understanding of how the past has been interpreted and represented through the study of political, economic, sociological and archaeological concepts and arguments.

You will be given the opportunity to visit historical sites and locations during your studies; previous destinations have included Washington DC, Madrid, Berlin, D- Day battle fields,  Hampton Court and the Imperial War Museum. Guest speakers from local universities and museums have given talks to students on civil rights in America, the First World War, the Korean War and Witchcraft in early modern Europe. The History department also supports a hugely popular History and Archaeology Community Society which offers monthly quizzes and lectures from members of staff as well as visiting experts. Popular talks have included the D-Day landings (attended by a veteran of that event) and Reflections on Auschwitz when we were honoured to meet a Holocaust survivor. The passion and commitment of our staff has been reflected in excellent results which emphasise our determination to help every student enjoy the subject and achieve success.
