About the subject
The History of Art is a truly inspiring course which provides candidates with an opportunity to study painting, sculpture and architecture in conjunction with cultural history. The AQA course is designed to give candidates a broad understanding of the chronological and stylistic development of western European art. Students will show evidence of their own and others' critical analysis of the world of art and design. They will use the language of the subject sensitively and thoughtfully to identify and develop ideas relating to the thematic content and the formal approaches of artists, makers, writers and critics. We warmly recommend students to visit the National Gallery, Tate Britain, Tate Modern and the Saatchi Gallery, providing learners with the opportunity to experience works of art first-hand.
Learning Styles
The modular development of the course encourages students' work to progress naturally in complexity, maturity and individuality. A range of learning styles is accommodated using a variety of teaching methods and resources.

Subject combinations and progression
This is not a practical art course , it is suitable for the diverse range of candidates who wish to develop their interest and enjoyment in the study of art history and can enrich programmes of study for both Art, Technology and Media students as well as those with academic programmes including History, Classical Civilisation, English and Performing Arts.
