History of Art AS Level
This course teaches visual and descriptive skills and provides a broad introduction to the major artists and styles in western art history from Ancient Greece and Rome to Modern Art.
What does the course involve?
Are you interested in the visual world around you? Are you curious about how images work in our society? Do you want to know more about how and why images look the way they do? As an Art History student you will gain the knowledge and skills that will enable you to make your own judgements of the visual world, learning how to describe, explain and interpret works of painting, sculpture and architecture.
You will understand how art works and what it means, as well as how it reflects and relates to the time in which it is created. Both your historical knowledge and visual skills will be developed and this makes Art History a useful subject to study alongside Fine Art, Art and Design, History, Archaeology and Classics.
Themes are identified through the study of some of the major styles and movements of western art, including Greek and Roman art and architecture, 19th century painting including the Realists, Pre-Raphaelites and Impressionists, and 19th century sculpture and architecture.
Students can progress to the A2 Level course which offers more detailed study of two historical periods, 15th century Europe and Europe and the USA between 1900-1945.
