2. Course description The course is a 200 year narrative history. Following 1815, European imperial expansion replaced the collapsing Ottoman Empire, itself to be replaced post 1918 by Britain, France and later the USA securing for themselves the world's largest supplies of petroleum. It was during this period that most of today's modern-day middle eastern states were created and their regimes forged but under their client management by the West, and latterly the Soviet Union subsequently Russia. Today all, with the possible exception of Israel and the Assad regime in Syria, have developed an enduring pervasive resentment, indeed hatred of the West and Russia.
