A distance learning course is the ideal way to gain a Higher Level Teaching Assistant Diploma.This home learning programme has been developed to enable those working, or hoping to work, in the role of ‘Higher Level teaching assistant’ (HLTA), to acquire and develop a level of understanding and skills that will help them to do this effectively.

Special Educational Needs

A distance learning course is the ideal way to gain a qualification in Special Educational Needs (SEN). This Special Educational Needs course is divided into four units, each of which deals with one or more learning outcomes related to one or more aspects of working with children who have specific needs and requirements. Once you have completed the entire course you will have achieved all the learning outcomes.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Understand child and young person development
  • Understand how to support disabled children and young people and those with specific requirements
  • Understand how to support children and young people to achieve their learning potential
  • Understand how to support positive practice with children and young people with speech, language and communication needs
  • Understand the speech, language and communication needs of children and young people with behavioural, social and emotional difficulties

Course Key Topics The Level 4 in Higher Level Teaching Assistant is divided into five comprehensive modules & Level 3 in Special Educational Needs is divided into four comprehensive modules.

Unit 1: Communication and Positive Relationships
Unit 2: Curriculum, Planning and Assessment
Unit 3: Child Development
Unit 4: Personal Professional Development
Unit 5: Equality and Diversity and Inclusion

SEN

Unit 1: Child and young person’s development
Unit 2: The support of disabled children and young people and those with specific requirements
Unit 3: Supporting children and young people to achieve their learning potential
Unit 4: Working with children and young people with speech, language and communication needs.

You will be provided with comprehensive materials designed to provide you with everything required to complete your Higher Level Teachning Assistant & Special Educational Needs Course. Course Assessments

The Course is marked through a process of continuous assessment guided by your tutor following NCFE guidelines. This means that your qualification will be awarded according to your performance on assessments rather than by taking an exam.

We send the full course out, you then read through the course in your own time and complete the assignments which you send to your tutor for marking. There is no word count for these assignments. However, one sentence answers will be rejected and you will have to re-submit it for marking.

Upon verification of the activities, exercises and assignments, a certificate of achievement will be awarded by the national awarding organisation NCFE, as confirmation that your written work has met all of the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the programme.

Course Duration

We recommend you spend approximately 420 hours of your time studying for the Higher Level Teaching Assistant & Special Educational Needs course. The pace of study is completely up to you. To give an example, if you dedicate 8 hours a week to the course it would take you a year to complete but if you could spare 16 hours a week you could complete it in six months.
