Entry Requirements
An interview is required.
We actively
encourage applicants with appropriate work experience who do not have
formal qualifications to apply. However, you will gain maximum benefit if
you hold a BTEC National qualification, an Advanced GNVQ or one A level.
If you have previous relevant experience you may gain exemptions
accrediting your previous experience and learning.
Description
This
is a new, revised programme aimed at people who wish to further their
career development in a wide range of business organisations. All business
organisations demand well qualified, versatile and adaptable staff with
high level skills and knowledge with sound business acumen. The HNC in
Business is designed to help you succeed in business. It provides you with
the knowledge, understanding and skills required for success in current
and future employment. It also equips you with the transferable skills
needed to enable you to meet the changing circumstances of business
practice and the environment. If your next career move is with management
or you wish to further develop your management skills, this is for you.
Course
Content
All candidates will study the core units and optional units.
Core
Units:
- Marketing: Examining the principles of the marketing process

Managing Financial Resources: Interpretation of financial information and
use of financial techniques
- Organisations & Behaviour: Organisational
and management theory and practice
- Business Environment: Examines the
global and national context in which organisations operate
- Research
Project: An introduction to the techniques and methods of research
Option
units may include some of the following:-
- Business Decision Making:
This will increase your ability to evaluate numerical data
- Employment
Laws: Employment law looks at the employment relationship and individual
employment rights in a business context
- Managing Human Resources:
This unit is designed to develop a broader approach to HRM practice

Managing Activities to Achieve: Focuses on effective and efficient
planning and management of work activities
- Management Accounting:
Deals with different costing and budgetary systems
- Advertising and
Promotion: This will help you to gain knowledge of advertising and
promotion as part of an approach to marketing communications
Where a
course is aimed towards an assessment/examination, it is expected that all
students will enter for the qualification.
Method of Assessment
Continuous
assessment using a variety of work-based assignments and projects.
Progression
HNC
Business graduates may have the opportunity to complete a Top-up Degree
with University College Winchester upon completion. The Chartered
Institute of Marketing, Chartered Institute of Management, the Association
of Accounting Technicians, and the Chartered Institute of Management
Accounting also recognise the HNC. Alternatively, there may be the option
to study for a further year, part-time, to complete the 6 additional units
required to achieve an HND qualification.

year of study.
