You will gain knowledge and expertise in areas such as materials and testing, structural mechanics, structural design, health and safety, civil engineering technology, mathematics, contract and project management, and computer aided design. The course is designed to give students a firm grounding in civil engineering subjects, and includes a practical content, allowing students to gain an understanding and experience of the civil engineering world. The course is taught within a classroom environment with practical experience gained from workshops, field trips and site visits. This HNC will enable learners to achieve appropriate professional body recognition in particular, but not exclusively, from the Chartered Institute of Building.

Course programme

The HNC in Civil Engineering develops knowledge and skills in areas such as geotechnics, civil engineering contracts and project management, construction site surveying, and construction technology (substructure and structural mechanics).


Candidates will gain contemporary vocational skills including study, research, analysis, planning and organisational skills. They will also learn to take responsibility for their own learning and develop abilities to be flexible and to work co-operatively with others.

Two academic years (part time)

One day per week 9am – 6.00pm Monday or Wednesday
