About this course

One Higher Grade pass at grade C or above and three other passes at Standard Grade (or equivalent) at band 3 or above; or completion of 16 relevant National Qualification units including at least Communication 3 and be obtained within one session. For learners with alternative entrance qualifications school policy applies.

This is one of the revised SQA Higher National course frameworks designed to provide candidates with up-to-date and relevant skills currently in high demand by employers and professional organisations. The HNC Computing is a Higher National computing award, which allows candidates to gain skills and knowledge in core computing subject areas and core skills. This award is aimed at those employed or wishing to be employed, in roles such as, Trainee Computer Technician, Trainee IT Officer or to progress to a HND year 2 programme using appropriate subject options for either Software Development or Technical Support.

COURSE CONTENT

A selection of core units includes:
Computer Architecture; Applications Software; Computer Hardware using CISCO IT Essentials Curriculum; Program Planning; Software Development Introduction.

A selection of optional units includes:
Some of the proposed optional subjects available for course candidates include: either the knowledge and understanding required for the CompTIA A+, HP IT Essentials and MCDST (Microsoft Desktop User Support Technician) Certification, or Software Development; Structured Programming System Development Introduction.

PROGRESSION
On completion of the course schedule which includes 12 credits learners may progress to either 2nd year of the HND Technical Support or Software Development dependant on achievement and optional units chosen. The HNC is accepted as an entry level qualification for a range of university degree programmes.
