Course programme

Electrical Engineering (Power)Course ModulesWhat our Graduates doEntry Requirements

This is a relatively new programme to address national skills shortages within the field of power engineering. It is an exciting opportunity to gain both a qualification and skills within a challenging and rewarding engineering discipline. The industry offers fantastic career paths and job prospects locally, nationally and even internationally.

Power engineering is a term that describes the maintenance, design and manufacture of electrical power systems and networks, from generation to the consumer’s meter. This is the network that provides homes, businesses, hospitals, schools, etc., with the electrical power they need to survive and compete. It is of vital importance to the country, effectively being the blood within its veins.

The course, comprising eight modules (HNC) and a further eight (HND), covers the fundamental engineering and electrical concepts and skills required of a higher technician as well as providing a sound basis for further study at degree level. As with all engineering day release programmes, individual modules may be studied separately to update knowledge. The course is delivered through mixture of classroom activity, guided assignment work and examinations. Emphasis is placed on problem solving skills and students should expect the delivery to reflect this combined with associated mathematical concepts. The programme will be delivered in conjunction with British Power International.

For those who have appropriate experience of working within this sector the programme is also offered as part-time study over four years. The part-time Electrical Engineering programme will allow you to fit other commitments around your study time but will include the same modules as the full-time course.

Work within the energy sector is expanding rapidly in this area. This is a great opportunity to enhance skills and take advantage of opportunities in the future.

Electrical Engineering (Power) Modules include:

  • Engineering Science

  • Analytical Methods for Engineers

  • Business Management Techniques

  • Electrical and Electronic Principles

  • Project (Design, Implement, Evaluate)

  • Electrical Power

  • Utilisation of Electrical Energy

  • Mechatronics

Our graduates either begin an exciting career in the workplace within this high-tech industry or/and continue to degree level professional development programmes either full or part-time. Graduates of the part-time HNC/D programme typically use this qualification to increase promotional career opportunities within their sector

Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma or 2 A Levels in relevant subjects, or level 3 qualifications in maths and science or equivalent. Industrial experience may also be considered.
