Overview

The Higher National Certificate (HNC) bridging course consists of three BTEC level 3 units, each worth 10 credits. If you want to improve your mathematical and analytical skills in preparation for a level 4 BTEC HNC Engineering qualification, this course is for you.

The course covers the following units and topics:

Unit 4 – Mathematics for Engineering Technicians

Topics include:

  • Algebraic methods,
  • Trigonometric methods and standard formula to determine areas,
  • Statistical methods to display data,
  • Elementary calculus techniques.

Unit 28 – Further Mathematics for Engineering Technicians

Topics include:

  • Advanced graphical techniques,
  • Applying algebraic techniques,
  • Manipulation of trigonometric expressions and application of trigonometric techniques,
  • Application of calculus.

Unit 5 – Mechanical Principles and Applications

Topics include:

  • Determining the effects of loading in static engineering systems,
  • Determining work, power and energy transfer in dynamic engineering systems,
  • Determining the parameters of fluid systems,
  • Determining the effects of energy transfer in thermodynamic systems.

Entry Requirements

A level 3 engineering or science qualification, awarding bodies to include: City & Guilds and EAL. Other appropriate qualifications will be considered individually, including those offered by students returning to education.
