Course programme

HNC Mechanical Engineering Overview

Mechanical engineering serves an important role in our everyday lives and in the function of engineering businesses, it encompasses the principles behind static and dynamic systems and materials used in manufacturing processes.

This course will develop your working knowledge of how to analyse and design mechanical systems, produce both 2D and 3D CAD files and manufacture them using CAM, and important business principles that a manufacturing company requires in the engineering industry.

If you are undertaking further professional development, or wish to pursue a career in electrical engineering, then these courses will suit your needs.

This course is validated by Edexcel.

Entry requirements

All applicants will be invited to an interview to discuss qualifications, experience and other related issues.

In order to start this course, you will be expected to have successfully completed, or have evidence of working towards, at least one of the following:

  • At least 160 UCAS points at A Level in appropriate subjects
  • NVQ Level 3 in a related electrical engineering discipline
  • Appropriate BTEC National Diploma with MM profile or Extended Diploma with MMP profile or above
  • Other relevant Level 3 qualification (normally at merit grade) – if you are unsure contact the college to see if we accept your qualification.
  • Alternatively, we will consider substantive experience in a relevant field.

We also normally require GCSE English and maths at grade C or above: literacy and numeracy at Level 2 are essential requirements.

Please note that maths at Level 2 is required for progression onto full degree courses, should you choose to continue your education beyond a HND course.

Start dates and fees

Course fees are payable for each year of all university level courses. To identify your course fees and the financial support available to you, please see the HE section of the website or contact a member of the HE team at the college.

Provisional timetables will be discussed at interview, and confirmed in the final joining instructions which all students will receive in July.

The table below shows you when the course starts. You may be charged a fee for your course depending on your age and circumstances.

  • Engineering Innovation Centre
How will I be assessed?

Assessment methods are varied and may include written reports, presentations, case studies, individual/group projects and reflective statements. Where units are work-related, assessment will relate to your own organisation (where appropriate) and/or vocational setting. For mathematical subjects there may be time based assessments in the classroom.

What does the course lead to?

This course will provide you with knowledge, understanding and professional skills you can take into your career or current role. You can expect to move on in your vocational field into senior level roles upon completion.

What will I study?

HNC units:

  • Analytical Methods for Engineers
  • Engineering Science
  • Project Design, Implementation and Evaluation
  • Advanced Computer Aided Design
  • Computer Aided Manufacture
  • Business Management Techniques for Engineers
  • Workplace study and Ergonomics
  • Materials Engineering
  • Mechanical Principles (required if top-up to HND)
  • Engineering Design

Module titles may change.

What can I go on to study?

Upon successful completion of this programme, you have the opportunity to complete our one-year HND Mechanical Engineering (top-up) programme.

Engineering students may wish to apply for membership of professional institutes or bodies such as the IMechE after completing their programme.
