The aim of the diploma is to provide necessary skills, knowledge and attitudes appropriate to the pursuit of a variety of careers in industrial, commercial or public sector organisations. The range of destinations to which the learner can aspire is diverse. Careers in industry, banking, insurance, civil service, local government and the distribution sector are typical outcomes. As the significance of the Internet grows, it is important that learners undertaking business courses gain an appreciation of the impact of this technology upon the business enterprise. To that end, the course has been revised to include knowledge of analysing & utilizing information for strategic purposes.

A selection of core units includes:
World Economy, Behavioural Skills; Law; Financial Forecasting; Business Culture & Strategy; IT Applications; Statistics; Graded Unit (Project); Graded Unit (Exam); Managing People; Communications; Accounting; Marketing.

A selection of optional units includes:
Customer Care; Market Research; Managing a Small Business; Human Resources; Financial Services.

NOTE:
Applicants who achieve 3 Higher Grade passes may be able to access the Diploma of Higher Education in Business.

PROGRESSION
Successful completion of the course can lead to trainee positions in management and administration in industry, commerce and the public sector (e.g. local government/ civil service). Entry to 2nd year of a range of degree courses and to 3rd year of Business degree programmes may be available. The breadth of the course allows successful learners to access a wide range of business degree programmes.

Requirement
Candidates will have passes in 2 Highers in appropriate subjects such as Business Management, Modern Studies, Economics, English, History or an NC in Business or an appropriate NC with passes in Communication, Economics, Finance, Law. For entry to the 2nd year of the HND, learners will have 15 credits, including a pass in Graded Unit 1, from the 1st year of their HND Business. NOTE: Applicants who achieve 3 Higher Grade passes may be able to access the Diploma of Higher Education in Business.
