You will normally need to have at least one of the following:
- a BTEC National Diploma in an appropriate area such as Computing
- an AVCE/GNVQ in an appropriate vocational area
- a GCE A Level profile which demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or an adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at level A-C
- other related Level 3 qualifications
- an Access to Higher Education Certificate with related experience
- related work experience in IT or IT related industries
- evidence of competencies in technical skills deemed directly relevant to Software Engineering
WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?
The BTEC Higher National Diploma are a specialist vocational programme with a strong work related element at HND level, which is included as one of the 2nd year units. The qualification provides a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in the sector with national recognition by employers allowing progression direct into employment or to degree.
It is a franchised award; the awarding body is the University of Chichester (UC). Furthermore it also allows students to achieve the full CCNA qualification (Cisco Certified Network Associate), a vocational qualification widely recognized through the software and networking industry.
HOW WILL I LEARN?
The Isle of Wight College is considered to be in the top 10% in the country and subsequently is highly focused upon the use of highly appropriate and engaging methods of learning. The assignments set will be based around realistic scenarios supported by realistic tasks and projects.
HOW IS THE COURSE ASSESSED?
Each unit is internally assessed and graded by lecturers. Grades awarded are Pass, Merit or Distinction. The overall grade awarded for this qualification is Pass/Fail.
WHAT CAN THIS COURSE LEAD TO?
A key progression path for BTEC Higher National Diploma learners is to the second or third year of a degree or honours degree programme, depending on the match of the BTEC Higher National units to the degree programme in question. Alternatively, successful candidates can enter employment or undertake further more specialist study.

WHAT ABOUT PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION?
The BTEC Higher Nationals in Computing have been developed with career progression and recognition by professional bodies in mind. Learners possessing an HNC/D in computing and a number of years (usually between 3-5 years) of post HNC/D experience in the IT or computing industry are able to apply for Associate Membership of the British Computer Society.
