Who is this course for?

What are the entry requirements?
No special skills or previous knowledge of the subject is required. A basic command of written and spoken English is expected. You will need to bring evidence of any art, design or related craft activity.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.
  • Minimum Literacy Level: Entry 2

  • You can read and understand short pieces of writing such as letters, messages, simple stories, timetables and adverts. You can write short pieces of writing - for example an email to a friend, a simple letter, a story or a message.
  • Minimum Numeracy Level: Entry 2

  • You can work with numbers, symbols, and simple diagrams. You can add and subtract simple numbers and use simple fractions. You can use money, tell the time, measure things and know about squares, triangles and rectangles.

Where can it lead?
You could go on to further study at a higher level. Or find employment in a related area, open a small business or work with other companies.

What will I study?
The course introduces you to basic practical skills and home interior awareness. Subjects you will study include, Design Units, Business Studies, IT and Health & Safety. You will then have a choice from the following options: Soft Furnishing, Upholstery, Interior Design, Painting & Decorating, Special Finishes, and Textile Crafts.

How will I be taught?
Learning is mainly through the use of practical demonstrations and then learner practice, but you will also be given individual project work.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed on set projects and assignments at regular intervals, at the end of each project. You will need to complete each unit to acquire credits towards LOCN accreditation of achievement.

What support is available while I am on the course?
You will have access to a personal tutor to help you throughout the course. The College offers a comprehensive range of student services including learning support, language support and guidance.
