HORSE MANAGEMENT (BTEC National Certificate)

Why should I come to Pendleton College?
The College prides itself on being the only College in the area to offer the Advanced-Level course. We are also unique in that qualifying students have the opportunity to take the British Horse Society examination at no cost to themselves. Students on this course benefit from highly-qualified, experienced staff and the opportunity to receive excellent training for a career in the Equine Industry using the superb facilities at our Equine Unit in Kearsley. These include a selection of well-trained and well-behaved horses, indoor and outdoor schools, lecture and practical demonstration facilities and full use of the College's excellent resources at other sites.

What will I study?
A BTEC National Certificate is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignment that are based in realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. As well as learning about the employment area you have chosen, you develop the skills you need to start or progress a career. The certificate is equivalent to two A-Levels which means when you have finished the course you can chose whether to get a job or go into higher education. A BTEC National certificate can be taken full-time or part-time and is equally suitable for school leavers and mature students. The course is made up of twelve units. Six units in year one gives the BTEC Nation al Award qualification:
  • Stable Skills
  • Horse Husbandry
  • Horse Behaviour and Welfare
  • Practical Equitation
  • Theory of Equitation
  • Business for Land Based Industries
Six units in year two gives the BTEC National Certificate:
  • Riding and Training on the Flat
  • Riding horses over fences
  • Equestrian Teaching
  • Horse Fitness and Training
  • Animal Anatomy and Physiology
  • Investigative Project in the Horse Sector

What will I achieve?
BTEC National Certificates are valued by employers and higher education (universities and colleges). Students go into careers in stables, riding schools, the horse racing industry, working with police horses, grooming and competitive riding. If you decide to go to university or college you could study a foundation degree in Equine Business and Leisure Management or Equine Science.

How is the course assessed?
Regular assignments are set for homework. Riding and Stable Management are continually assessed throughout the year.

What else will I do?
As with all Further Education students you will develop the key skills of communication, numeracy and information technology. Students will also visit horse shows and events of an educational nature.
