Horse Management BTEC National Diploma

Aim This course is the equivalent of 3 A-levels and therefore can lead to entry into Higher Education. You will have already developed an acceptable standard of equitation and horse care. New College Stamford has access to excellent equestrian facilities and instructors. Included in the course is practical instruction, study tours and work experience in the equine industry.
Included as an integral part of the course is tuition towards sitting and passing the relevant British Horse Society qualifications, to help you achieve your chosen career goals.

A non-riding option is available.

Content Over the 2 years you will study four core modules and 14 optional units to include:
· Horse husbandry
· Practical equitation
· Horse behaviour and welfare
· Event management
· Theory of equitation
· Competition grooming
· Grassland production
· Anatomy and physiology of the horse
· Industry experience
· Horse fitness and training
· The horse racing industry
· Equestrian teaching
· Sports psychology.

Lectures and practical sessions at New College Stamford and a local riding school, plus work experience. Study tour, guest speakers, visits to a variety of equestrian establishments.

Progression/career opportunities Four GCSEs at Grade C or above, preferably including Maths, English and Science, or a First Diploma at merit level. Ability to ride at BHS stage 1 or Pony Club C+ standard. A determination to succeed. In order to comply with industry standards, the Equine Centre has a weight limit of 85kg (13 stones 5lb) for all riders.

Screening
Students will also be screened (in the College) and must achieve literacy and numeracy at the level appropriate to the course.
