Programme Description:
This is a two year level 3 programme which focuses on developing the skills needed to pursue a career in equine management and is based at the college competition yard and BHS examination centre. The course aims to develop the learner's practical skills and underpin these with the scientific principles of horse health, anatomy, nutrition, working in the equine industry, horse husbandry and yard management and supervision. The course includes a compulsory work experience unit of eight weeks placement over two years.
Learners will complete a 90 credit diploma in the first year and, subject to satisfactory progress, will continue onto a 120 credit diploma or 180 Extended Diploma in the second year. As part of the programme learners will also complete Essential Skills and opportunities will be provided for GCSEs in English and Mathematics.
Alongside the course there will be the opportunity to take BHS Stage 2 and 3 examinations subject to reaching the required standard.

About this course

Progression and Employment:
Successful students have the opportunity to progress to Higher Education, for example full or part-time Foundation Degree courses, or to enter careers such as yard management, stud work, the racing industry or advisory services.
Both the Extended Diploma Course and the BHS exams carry UCAS points, enabling the learner to apply for Higher Education courses.

Programme Features:

  • Learners are timetabled for alternate weeks of academic studies and practical assessment on the college yard. The college has a selection of well-schooled horses, suitable for dressage and show jumping, and both indoor and outdoor arenas
  • Coleg Sir Gar has been approved as a British Horse Society Examination Centre and also offers Riding and Road Safety tests
  • The course includes some visits to specialist equine establishments
  • Learners study Essential Skills in Communication and Application of Number, as a mandatory part of the course
  • Learners have the opportunity to participate in examination training days and clinics delivered by BHS instuctors and examiners
  • Learners have the opportunity to compete and to help run competitions held at the college yard
  • Coleg Sir Gar runs British Horse Society exams from stage 1 to stage 3

Method of Assessment The course is continually assessed throughout by means of written assignments, practical tasks, oral and written tests. British Horse Society exams are practical assessments in both ridden and horse knowledge and care sections.
