Students will gain the skills to enhance their career prospects and progress to more advanced courses.

Course programme

No specific entry requirements are required, but students must show, through an interview, committment to the course. No experience of horticulture is necessary. Course Content Students will learn how to cultivate and care for plants, and assist in creating and maintaining a sensory garden. Students will work in the College garden centre and retail shops to develop skills in customer care. Students will learn about the following: • health and safety in the workplace and the principles of good working practice • building work relationships, interpersonal skills and working successfully as a team • propagation, growing, planting and maintaining plants. Students will learn about growing crops such as seasonal vegetables, Herbs and salad crops. Students will harvest crops to supply the Hix restaurant with fresh produce. • decorative horticulture, design, planted baskets, giftware and cut flowers • retail skills, creating shop displays, window dressing and stock control. Students will also learn about working as a volunteer and obtain interview and job-seeking skills. There is an action-packed, activity-filled residential stay at Kelly College. In addition, there will be other fun days out to garden centres and plant nurseries, and the opportunity to volunteer in local community projects. Functional Skills These are the skills that are commonly needed for success in a range of activities in education and training, work and life in general: • Maths • English • Computer skills (ICT). How will I be assessed? The course is assessed through a portfolio of evidence; these can be written pieces, witness statements or photographs. English, maths and ICT are assessed through formal exams, which can be taken when the student is ready. Progression On successful completion, students will be encouraged to progress to the Level 2 Certificate in Horticulture. Fees • If you are aged 16-18 as of 31st August on the year of enrolment - no course fee. • If you are over 19 as of 31st August and enrolling on a full-time programme of study a tuition fee will be applicable in most cases. Bursary Funds There are financial support arrangements for 16-18 year olds and hardship funds available for the over 19s.
