You must be aged 19 or over and have an interest in food and the commitment to succeed on this course. If you are studying this course on part-time basis, you must be working in a supervisory role in the industry and want to gain a nationally recognised qualification.

Introduction:
This programme is for those who are employed, or wish to be employed, in a supervisory position in the catering industry. It is designed to complement the training and experience gained in employment.

Study Mode & Location:
This one year course can be studied on a part-time basis (for 6.5 hours per week) or as a Part-Time+ Course. It will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St Vincent`s Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.

Course Content:
Areas of study include:

  • Supervising the work of staff.
  • Maintaining positive working relationships.
  • Controlling resources.
  • Health, hygiene and safety.
  • Maintaining food production operations/the food service/the drinks service/supervising a function.
  • Contributing to the development and introduction of recipes and menus.
  • Maintaining cellar and drink storage operations.
  • Monitoring and solving customer service problems.


Assessment:
You will be assessed via practical observations in a realistic working environment (such as the College`s Vincent`s restaurant) or in the workplace. As part of this course will need to produce a portfolio of evidence, which demonstrates your competences.

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
Successful completion of this course allows progression to higher level courses such as an HNC/HND or Degree. You may also seek employment at a supervisory level in the hospitality industry.

Part-Time+ Route
You will need to complete a Further Education Application Form. These will be available from mid-May.
Many courses have limited places so please return your application form as soon as possible. Following acceptance of your application, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.

Part-Time Only Route
You will need to have an informal interview with a Adult Admissions Adviser.

Depending upon your circumstances, you may be able to study for FREE or at a reduced price.

Part-Time+ Course Benefits
Part-Time+ courses are ideal if you are looking to return to education, change career or progress to higher level studies. Courses last between 11 and 18 hours per week, for a full year and fit in with school hours and holidays. They offer:
