Understand stress and how it links to disability, including the impact of long term stress and mental ill-health. Understand the difference between stress that is part of everyday life and can stimulate a workforce and stress that can have an impact on the mental health of a workforce (including external factors and pressures). Understand the legal obligations as an employer and how the law relates to employees who suffer from stress. Learn what reasonable adjustments can be put in place for employees, to create a healthier work environment. Suitable for: HR and personnel managers, occupational health professionals, health and safety managers and disability or diversity practitioners.

Group Head of Health, Royal Mail Group
Specialist Occupational Physician, FFOM. Last role included managing the largest occupational health contract in the largest occupational health contract in UK. Major work in attendance allowance. Before joining Royal Mail Group in 2002, Su was a specialist occupational physician with British Airways where her responsibilities included pilot licensing medical examinations, employment guide policies, attendance management programmes, stress awareness, release of medical records, employee opinion survey facilitation, and general occupational issues.

He is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and an Associate of the Employers’ Forum on Disability. He is a highly experienced consultant and trainer with a high level of expertise in all areas of disability issues and how they impact on organisations.

A total of 13.5 million working days were lost to work-related stress, depression and anxiety in 2007/08.
Developing a working environment that promotes good mental health and encouraging supportive and responsive management practices is a core part of sustainable employment practices. Whilst stress itself is not covered by the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), work-related stress is a leading occupational health problem in the UK. As stress related absence becomes more and more common, organisations need to understand what stress means and how to prevent and manage it in the workplace.
This Hot Topic will be chaired by Rick Williams, EFD Associate and Director of Freeney Williams, and will include case studies from Bela Gor, Legal Director, Dr. Su Wang, Group Head of Health, Royal Mail Group will provide a member case study. A personal perspective of experiencing stress as an employee will be provided by Steve Walter, Making Connections Matter.
