HTML Advanced
Requirements:
Attendee's will have attended our stage 1 course, or have had at least 2 months practical experience of the topics covered on our, or a similar introductory course. The course will use Note Pad and Internet explorer as the default editor and Browser. If you require another browser please ask and we will try to accommodate you. Generous amounts of practice time have been built into the two-day course.
Course suitable for:
This course is designed for people who have covered the topics in the Stage 1 course and wish to progress further with their coding and understanding of HTML and Web page design using traditional hand coding. If you are going to use a Web authoring package, then we suggest that perhaps a one-day overvie- of this course will be sufficient to enable you to appreciate ho- HTML works behind the scenes. For small groups or fast-track delegates, this course can be covered in a single day or treated as an overview.
Course objectives:
On completion of this course delegates will be able to create user forms for front end use and identify the use of CGI scripting for returning information. The course shows ho- to create and apply styles through Style Sheets and work with image maps and a range of graphic formats. The course teaches users ho- to work with multimedia elements, namely sound and movie files and covers an overvie- of CGI and Java and JavaScript. Delegates wishing to spend any significant time on Java/JavaScript should see the associated outlines.
Course content:
Advanced Images: Advanced use of images. Design considerations; alternative text, browser viewable colours, download times. Background image and background colour considerations. Creating and using image maps; area shapes, targets, and map types.
Advanced Tables: Manipulating tables. Specifying a default table background colour. Specifying individual cell colour. Using a background image in a table. Cell horizontal and vertical alignment. Controlling table rules.
Forms: Creating a front-end user interface form. Appreciating ho- form data is collated by CGI scripting. Creating set input fields and scrollable input fields. Creating secure password fields. Creating drop-down multiple selection lists. Check boxes and radio buttons. Reset buttons and submission buttons.
Frames: Understanding and creating simple frames. Frame columns and rows. Controlling a frame area's elements; scrollbars, margins, etc. Coloured and borderless frames. Invisible frames for multiple browsers. Targeting links within frames; naming frames, using parents, creating ne- browser window, etc. Floating frames.
Enhancing your site: Overvie- of HTML special characters. Using Meta tags to reload the page or advance users to another site. Using Meta tags to add data to the browser's document information list. Using Meta tags to aid search engines in finding your site. Allowing users to download files in word processor, spreadsheet or DTP format. Verifying your page with on-line checkers. Site design tips from a Webmaster.
Style sheets: What is a style sheet, and ho- does it work? The style sheet attributes. Style sheets stored at the top of the page. Linking to an external style sheet.
Multimedia Overview: What is multimedia? Using multimedia on the web. Imbedding .wav sounds in your page. An overvie- of Java and Java scripting. Using JavaScript; creating pop-up or 'child' windows, automatic close, and creating your own back button. Marquee scrolling text for Microsoft Internet Explorer. An overvie- of animated gifs. An overvie- of CGI scripting. An overvie- of Netscape plug-ins.
