Human Biology
Access to HEFC Higher Education
The aim of the course is to provide a foundation for study at a higher level in biological sciences or health studies. Students will develop
The standard is Advanced Level to university entrance so previous experience in the Science/Biology field is helpful but not essential.
Course Content
Unit 1:
Cell Biology
to include the cellular organisation, structure and activities; cell membranes and transport; tissues, organs and energy supply
Cell Reproduction, Inheritance and Expression of Genetic Information
to include the cell cycle and cell division; DNA, RNA and protein synthesis; genetics and genetic engineering
The Chemistry of Living Systems
to include basic chemistry and the biochemistry of biological molecules, enzyme reactions and processes
Unit 2:
Human Physiology
to include mechanisms of action and control in the nervous system, cardiovascular systems, respiratory system, digestive system, excretory system and endocrine system; principles of homeostasis
The lessons each week will include topic work and tutorials. Practical exercises will take place during the course.

This course is offered during the day - Monday 9.30 - 10.30am, Tuesday 11.50am - 12.50pm and Wednesday 11.50am - 12.50pm
and on an evening - Monday 6.30 - 9.30pm.

- a knowledge and understanding of cell biology and human physiology
- an understanding of the basic chemical concepts involved in metabolic and physiological process
- laboratory skills and the ability to analyse and present data

- End of Unit Test - 40% of marks
