— Coventry University (@covcampus) February 9, 2015 OVERVIEW
This Human Biosciences course runs in 2016/17.
Human Biosciences is a rapidly changing, exciting and dynamic area of modern science which has given rise to significant scientific discoveries in the field of human health and disease.
This course aims to enhance your understanding of how the human body functions in health and disease at the tissue, cell and molecular level, throughout the lifespan. A wide range of human biosciences knowledge is covered, with a choice of subjects at levels two and three, offering you the opportunity to specialise your degree programme. There is also a focus on laboratory and other scientific skills.
If you choose this course you will benefit from:
- a degree programme recognised by the Royal Society of Biology, which fulfils the educational requirements for Associate Membership (AMSB) of the Society;
- a course with an emphasis on human health and disease, taught by academic staff who are active in research and consultancy, which allows them to bring this expertise into their teaching;
- a focus on acquisition of broad Human Biosciences knowledge and practical expertise that will be useful in your future career;
- hands-on experience of a wide range of practical techniques such as gene amplification using PCR, cell culture, flow cytometry, tissue staining, protein detection and bacterial growth, in modern, well- equipped laboratories;
- a focus on student-centred teaching in which you can take part in a mini-project and an independent research project in the final year;
- support in applying for long and short placements in laboratory settings and in other areas to help you to get the experience that employers want;
- use of guest lecturers with current experience in pharmaceutical sales, as hospital biomedical scientists, and other jobs in science to help you identify potential careers;
- the course team liaises with a wide range of employers to provide our students with specialist speakers, placements and help to find employment after graduation.
Recognition
Recognition shall be renewed in accordance with the Society’s standard review process and subject to the University maintaining the same high standards of
course delivery.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
The first year of the programme lays the foundation for the study of Human Biosciences. You will cover key study and research skills in physiology, health and disease in society, cell biology, biochemistry and microbiology.
In the second year you will further develop your study skills and research expertise and will study cell biology, molecular genetics and immunology in more detail, with a choice of either physiology or biochemistry.
The final year of your course gives you the opportunity to carry out an independent research project linked to one of the areas of your interest. You will also study human biosciences throughout the lifespan, including embryology and the biology of aging. You will then have a choice of two subjects from advanced genetics, cancer biology and clinical biochemistry, and either clinical physiology or medical microbiology.
HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?Through your studies you will develop a good knowledge of a range of disciplines and how they apply to human health and disease. This will include both theory and lab-based classes.
Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated seminars, workshops, practical classes and personal tutorials. There is a practical component which is supported by an extensive suite of analytical and biological laboratories staffed by experienced technicians.
An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 25%; coursework, tests, essays 45%; practical or project work 20%; group work etc. 5%; presentations, posters etc. 5%.
A compulsory Add+vantage module must also be completed: please see the page on the Add+vantage scheme for more details.
TEACHING CONTACT HOURSIn a typical week, you will have up to 18 contact hours of teaching, which would break down on average as shown below:
Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 6 hours of workshops/online tutorials (or later, individual project supervision) each week. In addition you can also arrange to see staff in their ‘drop in’ sessions for any additional help you may need
Medium group teaching: 6 hours of practical classes or skills workshops every week
Large group teaching: 6 hours of lectures every week
Personal study: 18 hours each week, including some guided study using handouts, online activities, etc.
