The key objectives of the MSc programme are to: Provide the scientific principles of human nutrition and metabolism. Explore current theories of the relationships between Nutrition in Health and Disease. Design and carry out research relevant to the study of human nutrition and metabolism. Train our students to communicate original scientific material to scientific audience. Suitable for: Students with many different backgrounds from the European Community as well as from overseas.

About this course
A degree in Medicine or second-class Honours degree in Biological Sciences (such as biochemistry, physiology, nutrition or medicine), or equivalent research or field experience.

The MSc in Human Nutrition and Metabolism is a research orientated degree which aims to provide training in human nutrition for graduates in Biological Sciences to equip them for future careers in academic or private institutions, clinical nutrition and public health.
Structure and Content
Human Nutrition
This course involves lectures and practical assignments on the topics of nutritional physiology, dietary assessment, energy metabolism, assessment of nutritional status, nutrient metabolism, diet and normal development, and diet and disease. There are also classes on critical appraisal of scientific literature in human nutrition.
Computing
This course involves training on the campus network, word-processing, spreadsheets and database systems as well as PowerPoint presentation and web authoring.
Applied Statistics
This course involves lectures on basic statistical techniques and is supported by computer-based practical exercises using SPSS for Windows.
Human Nutrition and Metabolism
This course involves lectures and practical classes on laboratory research methods, gene-nutrient interactions, epidemiology, study design and clinical nutrition.
Students, according to their marks for the above courses, can continue to either a MSc project or Diploma literature review:
MSc Research Project in Human Nutrition and Metabolism
This is a full-time original research project carried out in Aberdeen (at the University or Rowett Research Institute) or at another academic institution in the UK or overseas, which covers a wide range of topics from fundamental Nutrition to Public Health Nutrition.
Diploma Literature Review in Human Nutrition
This is a literature review on a topic chosen by the student in consultation with an appointed supervisor.
Assessment
The courses are assessed by continuous assessment (essays, laboratory practicals and individual and group presentations) and by written examinations. The MSc project is assessed by thesis and oral presentations of the project findings, and by oral examination.
