Course programme

What is this course about?

Access to HE courses are designed to give mature, motivated and academically focused learners an opportunity to return to study and apply for Higher Education (HE) courses. Access courses are very demanding but very rewarding; you will need lots of commitment and a positive attitude to learning new skills and gaining knowledge. The course has a strong tutorial system and you will receive full guidance and support for your HE and career plans. Your personal tutor will help you manage your learning effectively and provide friendly, confidential support through any problems you may have during your time at college. Access courses are validated by the QAA and are considered to be the same standard as A levels. Course Description

You will study a range of topics, dependent on your HE plans, taken from Sociology, Psychology, History and English Literature. All learners will develop their study skills in preparation for University as these are embedded within the course. It may be possible to take a GCSE alongside the course if this is needed for progression onto particular University courses. Entry Requirements, Assessment and Qualifications

Entry Requirements As Access courses are so intensive, it is expected that applicants will have evidence of recent study (particularly in English and Maths) or already hold a number of qualifications to show that they have the potential to succeed at Level 3. Very good communication skills are essential, particularly in written English, as extended essays and reports are the main forms of assessment. English and Maths GCSEs at Grade C or above are a requirement for most University courses and applicants should ideally have gained these before applying for the Access course.
