Introduction:
This course develops specialist payroll knowledge, along with essential IT, communication and management skills. Changes in employment legislation and European directives have meant that payroll adminsitration has become increasingly complex. This specialist qualification is therfore designed to develop the necessary competences for use in the workplace.

Time: Wednesday Morning 9.30am to 12.30pm or Wednesday evening 6pm to 9pm

Course Content:
Upon the completion of study for this qualification it is intended that the candidate will be able to:

  • Provide an overview of the Payroll Function
  • Calculate Gross Pay
  • Adjust pay for Statutory Contributions and Deductions
  • Adjust pay for Pension Contributions and other Voluntary Deductions
  • Adjust pay for Statutory Payments
  • Process starters and leavers
  • Understand different methods of payment
  • Provide and maintain key documents and records
  • Understand Confidentiality, Security and other Statutory Responsibilities


Upon completion, candidates should progress in their learning to further develop their knowledge, understanding and skills in;

  • Using aspects of a computerised payroll system incorporating use of commercial payroll software.
  • Further studies of HM Revenue and Customs procedures including month and year end
  • Using the information provided as a basis for calculating costs of production, administration, selling and distribution.
  • Dealing with redundancy, pensions and other legislation relating to payroll procedures
  • Ability to produce management reports in relation to payroll.
The course will help you to understand the broad objectives of payroll systems in order to carry out payroll tasks competently.

  • In summary, the qualification aims to enable candidates to:
  • Develop their understanding of day-to-day payroll procedures.
  • Develop the skills to perform routine and some non-routine payroll tasks.
  • Understand the importance of accuracy and security in performing any payroll task.

For candidates who pass their level 2 there will be the opportunity to progress on to the NVQ Level 3 Payroll Administration.

You may need to have an informal interview with a Adult Admissions Adviser before enrolling on this course.
Many courses have limited places so please enquire as soon as possible. Following interview, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.

The IAB Level 2 Certificate in Payroll is specifically designed to appeal to those who are aspiring to become professional payroll processors. The Level 2 qualification is primarily designed for the following candidates: Those who have achieved the IAB Level 1 Certificate in Payroll Those who are new to working in payroll but have some previous general knowledge of payroll procedures. Those who now wish to increase their skills and knowledge to that required of payroll clerks prior to employment. Those who have previously worked in payroll and have not received a qualification. Those who wish to return to working in payroll and need to update their knowledge. Those who are already employed in payroll processing or allied roles and who wish to ensure that they have both a firm foundation and the knowledge and skills to perform some non-routine tasks.
