About this course

Course suitability

The course is suited to those students who already have a grasp of the fundamentals of book-keeping and wish to add familiarity with a leading accounting package to their skills portfolio. Candidates should possess basic computer skills before enrolling. Satisfactory completion of the course will enable the student to demonstrate their skills with Sage Line 50 to a prospective employer. Those businesses considering the implementation of a computerised accounting package may wish to obtain training for their accounting staff via the Diploma in Computerised Book-Keeping.

Entry qualifications

Students wishing to join the Level 3 Diploma in Computerised Book-Keeping should first complete and pass the Level 2 Certificate in Book-Keeping. Ideally, they will also have completed , or be studying for, the Level 3 Certificate in Book- Keeping.

Information about the course

The course comprises 16 weeks of tuition leading to an external examination, administered by the International Association of Book-keepers (IAB). Your tutors are well-qualified both academically and in business and your course leader was nominated IAB "Lecturer of the Year" in 2006 by the IAB in a nationwide award. West Herts College has won the IAB "Best College" award on many occasions.

Course content

Students will learn how to set up the opening balances of a business on Sage Line 50 and process sales and purchase, payment and receipts transactions. They will be able to process accounting adjustments, buy and sell fixed assets and record the issue and repayment of loans. Students successfully completing the Diploma will be ready to use Sage Line 50 within a practical accounting environment, and to produce draft finanical statements and other management reports using the system.

When will I receive my results?

Results will be forwarded on as soon as they are received at the college. Please note that certificates, where awarded, can take up to 4 months to be received at the college before forwarding on to learners.

Delivery

Teaching takes place in modern IT suites with a dedicated computer for each students. Lessons are hands-on, with students carrying out the processing of accounting data under the supervision fo their tutor. Frequent summaries of key learning points are made using interactive whiteboards, where the tutor can demonstrate the operation of the system in real time for the class. Students are provided with tutorial package, a booklet of past examination papers and other bespoke learning materials as required.

Assessment

Students work under the guidance of their tutor who provides practical support individually to each student. Where appropriate, individual students are set personal targets to ensure that they achieve class goals. Prior to the final examination, a mock exam is set and individual feedback provided to students on their results and their focus as they approach the final exam.

Progression

Successful students may wish to add the IAB Level 2 Certificate in Computerised Payroll to their skills portfolio, or may wish to progress to Level 3 Diploma in Book-Keeping and Advanced Accounting.
