ICAO Aviation English Courses ICAO Aviation English Course - Level 4
This is an upper intermediate level course is aimed at taking you to Level 4 (Operational) competence in English according to the ICAO universal rating scales.
The main focus of the course will be on the plain English required for communication between pilots and air-traffic controllers, and between pilots and pilots. That said, we do expect you to be proficient in R/T phraseology and will include R/T comprehension practice in your course.
Course Content (General English)
Grammar
You’ll practise and review a wide range of grammatical structures within an aviation context. This includes review of verb tenses, question forms, articles, nouns, adjectives and adverbs, prepositions, and word order.
Vocabulary
You’ll focus on numbers, weights, measures, capacity, time, acronyms and abbreviations
Speaking & Pronunciation
You’ll get plenty of practice talking about areas of interest to you. Your trainers will monitor your pronunciation, stress and intonation throughout the course and will ensure you receive practice to address and overcome any problematic areas.
Listening
You’ll receive intensive listening comprehension practice by listening to a variety of international (British, North American, Irish, Australian, New Zealand and South African) accents (native speaker and non-native speaker) and consider ways in which native speakers reformulate and rephrase speech in many different situations.
Course Content (Aviation English)
Vocabulary
Your vocabulary focus will practise words and terminology relating to aircraft (parts, instruments, equipment, documentation), pre-flight, departure, cruising, contact, approach and landing, malfunctions, equipment failure, accidents and emergencies, evacuation, navigation, weather, security.
Speaking & Pronunciation
You’ll receive extensive practise in speaking in routine working situations as well as learn communication skills for non-routine and aircraft emergency situations including on board fire, engine failure, approach and landing problems, unusual events and fuel shortage. You will also learn and practise a wide range of communication repair strategies to ensure optimal communication is achieved.
Listening
You’ll listen to the Aviation English used in a number of different situations including examples of clear communication, breakdowns in comprehension because of language limitations, the dangers in using incorrect or non-routine language/incorrect R/T phraseology, and language used in emergency situations.

You’ll receive ongoing practice in the functional language and vocabulary relating to air traffic/flight management and to communications management including:

Course Length - Courses can be arranged from 1 to 8 weeks. The length of course you need will naturally depend on your level of English at entry. Please contact us for information and to discuss your requirements.
Testing & Certification - At the end of your course, you’ll sit an Aviation English Test at ICAO Level 4. You must reach Level 4 in all 6 categories to receive a certificate which is valid for a period of 3 years.
