What can this course offer me?
Double Applied ICT is an extension of Applied ICT for those students who want to study a wider range of ICT related areas. Just as for the Applied ICT, it involves a practical approach to the study of ICT, and ICT is related closely to real-life situations throughout the course. It offers you the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding which prepare you for higher education or employment in many ICT- related fields.
If you work hard, you are likely to achieve top grades in this course. Results have been significantly above the national average since the course began, and students achieve much more than their nationally-set target grades would predict. The course has a 100% pass rate.

What will I learn?
You will develop a broad background in ICT, as the units are very diverse.

At AS level (Year 1) you will study Units 1, 2 & 3 as for the Applied ICT and in addition:
  • Unit 4: ICT Solutions
  • Unit 5: Fundamentals of Programming
  • Unit 7: Creating a Website

At A2 level (Year 2) you will study Units 8, 10 & 14 as for the Applied ICT, and in addition:
  • Unit 9: Software Development
  • Unit 11: Communications and Networks
  • Unit 13: Systems Analysis

Just as with the Applied ICT, all lessons are based in computer suites, and are very practical in approach. Every effort is made to apply the work to relevant real-life situations, and to this end visits and visiting speakers are a central part of the course.

What Makes a good ICT (Applied) Double Award - See Single Award in conjunction student?
Please also see this section on the Applied ICT page. The Double Applied ICT course is predominantly aimed at students who are intending to continue with ICT to higher education level, or who are aiming for a career in ICT.

Which other courses link well with this subject?
Common subject combinations include business studies, economics, maths, media, and many others!

Future Opportunities
Studying Double Applied ICT equips you to progress onto degrees and other higher education courses in related subjects such as ICT, Computer Science, Information Systems, Multimedia, Software Engineering, Computer Networking, e-Business and Information Management.
UCAS points are accumulated in exactly the same way as for other AS/A2 subjects. You are awarded two AS grades and two A2 grades, depending on achievement in the individual units. The double-award units also allow you to become an ICT practitioner, and open up many opportunities in the ICT industry. For example, in web design, programming, project management, systems analysis, network management, etc.

Lauren Diggle, A2 Applied ICT Double Award (also studying A2 Business Studies), from Deyes High School, says:
"I think this course has brought understanding about the different aspects of the technology world, and helped people work together."

Is there anything else I need to know?
When choosing other courses, you must bear in mind that Double Applied ICT is two complete AS subjects. Most students at KGV study four subjects in the first year, dropping to three subjects in the second year. This leaves two other subject choices at AS level.
You are not restricted to taking the Double Applied ICT through to A2 level, as one of the subjects you drop may be part of the Double ICT. You would then continue with A2 Applied ICT, and your two other subjects.
