The BTEC First Diploma is a specialist work-related
qualification. It is designed to provide a preparation for
employment and/or career development opportunities if you are
already in work. On successful completion you may progress into
employment or continue with your studies.
What will I study?
This course teaches you about information systems and software
applications. You learn by completing projects and assignments that
are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and
demands. It is made up of six units - two core units that everyone
takes and four specialist units. The specialist units enable you to
study a particular area in more depth. All units are assessed and
graded and an overall grade for the qualification is then awarded.
There are no examinations on this course which is equivalent to
four GCSEs grades A* to C.

This can lead to further education at Lewisham College where
many of our students have progressed to National Diplomas, Higher
National Certificates/ Diplomas or degrees in subjects such as
computing, e-commerce, IT or multimedia. It also can lead to work
in business systems management, e-commerce and database management
roles.
What are the entry requirements?
You will need to complete an aptitude test and attend an
interview. You may also need a reference from previous academic
courses.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is in various ways including assignments, class work,
group work, phase tests, oral presentations, projects and formal
examinations. You will also have regular meetings with your
personal tutor to discuss your progress and to help plan your
studies. Additional support, help and guidance are also available
from the Guidance Team or from our Study Buddies.
What will it cost?
If you are under 19 and a home student, in most circumstances,
you don't pay any fees. However, you will need to find this out
when you apply.
