Course programme
BA (Hons) Illustration
Mode: full-time
Illustration builds, through project work, core drawing skills that are then combined with shared projects from the animation and graphics courses to help find you work in the field that is most relevant to your interests and strengths.
The unique nature of this combination of disciplines allows the maximum amount of flexibility to use illustration in a wide range of media such as video games, films, animation, advertising and publishing.
You will be introduced to the exciting field of contemporary visual communication which encompasses a diverse range of activities and professional opportunities including, book illustration, magazines, multi-media/web design, animation and design consultancy. The course offers a wide variety of artistic, technical and specialist skills through a practically based course of drawing, printmaking, painting, photography and video.
The course aims to focus your attention toward the professional and personally driven areas of applied image making/illustration within the context of a rapidly developing multicultural and technology influenced society, in which the traditional notions of image production are being continually challenged by new and exciting alternatives.
The curriculum offered is unique in that it combines aspects of Fine Art and Graphic Design courses. The units shared with Fine Art are those which develop skills in various image making processes, the Contextual Studies, and those concerned with developing a personal methodology for research and development of ideas within the discipline.
The course is also unusual in being taught alongside degrees in Fine Art and Graphic Design. All three disciplines explore the same media and apply the same processes, although to different ends.
It is expected that your experience will be enriched by seeing how other disciplines use the same media and processes to tackle different problems. This also reflects the convergence of these disciplines in the professional world.
You will be expected to make visits to exhibitions during the course. This is fundamental to the understanding of current art and design practice. Most relevant exhibitions will be in London and the excellent transport links between Luton and London will facilitate this.
There will also be occasional trips to other galleries/exhibitions, eg, the University of Humberside at its School of Art and Design, which houses the European Illustration Collection, Images, which is an annual British Illustration competition and touring exhibition of the year's very best contemporary illustration, the Elle talent competition, Society of Artists Agents Illustration awards, Design and Art Directors competition, Royal Society of Arts students awards etc, which regularly exhibit work.
