Is this course for me?

This course is for you, if you:

  • have achieved CACDP Level 3 in BSL or equivalent
  • wish to develop your BSL language skills, confidence and fluency to a higher level
  • wish to gain a better insight into the deaf community
  • wish to acquire some experiences of using appropriate BSL in various situations
  • wish to gain better understanding of BSL grammar at Level 4
  • wish to achieve the Level 4 NVQ in BSL
  • wish to receive practical and theoretical interpreter training
  • wish to become a Junior Trainee BSL/English Interpreter (JTI) and then a Trainee BSL/English Interpreter (TI)

What will I learn?

You will develop your BSL skills up to the NVQ Level 4 standard. We will do this by increasing your confidence, improving your language fluency skills which will enable you to develop the use of BSL at an advanced level. We will give you practical experiences which will prepare you for evidence collection and submission of the NVQ 4 BSL portfolio.

We will provide all the equipment and support you need to build your portfolio. You will be assigned an assessor (BSL user), who will support you through one-to-one assessments, tutorials and supervision sessions.

In conjunction with improving your BSL skills, you will also undertake formal theoretical and practical interpreter training to gain skills and knowledge in order for you to have the potential to register with the National Registers of Communication Professionals working with Deaf and Deafblind people (NRCPD) as a Junior Trainee Interpreter (JTI).

Once you have passed both the NVQ 4 in BSL and the interpreting assessment (IIDP) at the end of the programme, you will be able to register as a Trainee Interpreter (TI).

What does the course involve?

Nine modules of theoretical and practical training incorporating: BSL coaching, NVQ 4 BSL units, interpreter training and an IIDP assessment. We will provide evidence collection opportunities throughout the programme.
