What is Information & Communication Technology BTEC First Diploma?
A BTEC First Diploma is a practical, work related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.
Information Technology is about using computers to carry out tasks found in the work place. At present we are experiencing an IT revolution â€" the computer is changing the way we do business, communicate, spend our leisure time and learn. Many jobs today cannot be carried out effectively unless a computer is available. This one year course will develop your computer skills and theoretical knowledge as well as prepare you for a wide range of careers involving computers, either within a technical capacity or within a service providing role.
A BTEC First Diploma is equivalent to four GCSEs grades A*-C and is normally taken as a one-year full-time course.
Is the Information & Communication Technology BTEC First Diploma suitable for me?
Previous students have particularly enjoyed the â€OEhands-on†type of units. Students value the IT skills that they gain and the chances to use their knowledge in real-life situations.
Many students find the one-week work experience placement especially valuable, and some have subsequently gained employment at their placement companies.
How will I learn?
All lessons are taught in well-equipped IT rooms with work being completed on computers.
You will be encouraged to continue working on set projects and assignments in college, using college facilities, during your study period, outside of lessons.
There will be approximately 4-5 assignments set for each unit studied and these will be distributed as evenly as possible over the duration of the course.
How will I be assessed?
You will study seven units including Introduction to Computer Systems, Database, Software and Website Development.
For each unit, you will submit a portfolio of evidence, including assignments and screenshots of practical work. There are no examinations.
All units are assessed and graded, and an overall grade for qualification is awarded.
Progression
A BTEC First Diploma prepares you for employment and provides a good grounding to progress on to a more advanced course such as:
