Course programme

Information Technology (IT) is a rapidly changing industry and the BTEC 90 Credit course is designed to develop the IT professionals of tomorrow, who will be able to fill the wide ranging and challenging posts available within a broad range of organisations.

The course includes five core areas:

  • T network infrastructure
  • Computer hardware maintenance and upgrade
  • Database Design
  • Programming (including Games design)
  • IT in Business

In order to provide added relevance to the workplace, we have combined the study of three Microsoft MTA (Microsoft Technology Associate) courses within the BTEC framework. These accredited courses are as follows:

  • Microsoft Networking Fundamentals - course number 366
  • HTML5 App Development Fundamentals – course number 375
  • Database fundamentals – course number 364

We believe these will provide added employability to students completing the course, preparing them for the real world of IT. Please note, that students wishing to take the Microsoft Exams will be able to do so at the College exam centre, but they will need to fund this themselves.

For the course students will benefit from high specification PCs, a bespoke hardware maintenance lab and a networking room containing Cisco routers and switches which will be configured and tested by students during practical sessions. The PCs will have installed as standard, many industry leading applications such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, Blender and Gamesmaker. Students will also have the opportunity to access and configure Microsoft SQL and Microsoft Windows Server.

On the course you will also be able to explore your creative potential by studying the exciting world of Games Design and Animation. This part of the study programme provides students with many of the programming tools used by the industry.

We have a “learn by doing” ethos which entails work based projects where students are required to research, plan and present ‘live’ projects. This will prepare students for real world scenarios and give them confidence to enter and succeed in their chosen careers in IT.
