Course programme
Learn to safely manage the care of critically ill children and young people aged under 18, within and beyond the paediatric intensive-care environment. Deepen your theoretical understanding and develop your practical professional skills in this crucial area of work.
This module is for nurses who currently work in a children’s intensive care environment, or care for children in an adult intensive care environment. You will have had a minimum of 9 months experience in the intensive care setting before applying for this module.
Our module offers the theoretical and practical skills you need to safely and independently manage the care of any critically ill child or young person aged under 18. You’ll learn to provide Level 2 care both within the paediatric intensive-care environment and outside of it (such as during transfer), as well as Level 3 care within the paediatric intensive-care environment (with support from others in the multidisciplinary team).
As part of the course, you’ll experience periods of time in neonatal intensive care and in another paediatric intensive care setting with a different tertiary specialty from your normal place of work. This means that you will need to be flexible, and you’ll need the support of your clinical manager.
Assessment
You’ll submit a 6,000-word client-care analysis. Your practice will also be assessed by an experienced clinical mentor qualified in the speciality. You will need to identify a suitable mentor before starting this course, following discussion with the module leader and the clinical manager.
