Chinese 1 - Intensive

This programme is designed to give beginners a good foundation for further study in speaking, writing and reading Mandarin Chinese. With two evening classes per week ensuring that prior learning is more easily consolidated, this course offers beginners a reasonably fast paced introduction to Chinese.

The emphasis is on developing practical listening and speaking capability though the course will touch on reading and writing in the later classes. Students will learn the tonal system and emphasis will be placed on proper pronunciation. Pinyin and characters will be studied while basic grammar will be introduced.

In addition to the four hours of classes each week students will be given homework.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course students should:

  • have a basic understanding of vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation

  • be able to conduct basic social interactions in Chinese

  • be able to read and write Chinese at a basic level

    Chinese 2 - Intensive

    This course provides a natural continuation path for students who have completed CIS Chinese 1 Intensive or equivalent.

    The four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, will be further developed. More grammatical concepts and sentence structures will be introduced enabling students to communicate across a wider range of everyday and social activities as well as some particular situations.

    Learning Outcomes

    By the end of the course, students should be able to

  • Grasp more frequently used sentences and expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance
  • Describe one's thoughts and needs using more complicated grammar and sentence in routine and particular situations and carry out simple discussions
  • Describe things/stories and express one's opinions in more details
  • Recognise more commonly used characters
    Students who wish to continue with their studies after completing this course would be advised to enroll in a CIS Chinese 3 class.
