Course programme

Students on this course are seriously motivated to improve their practical English language skills, for general, work or study purposes.

The courses are fast-paced, focused and challenging, but lively and enjoyable. Students progress rapidly to the level of competence that they require.

Students on this course

As with the General English course, the students in either of the Full or Part-time Intensive General English courses will study a variety of topics. As the name implies, under the Intensive General English courses, students can expect to focus intensively on their studies. Blocks of study are built around morning, afternoon and/or evening sessions of three-hour time slots. Students, following either of these Part or Full-time courses, will be able to select the sessions most suitable to their personal needs, and these sessions will be agreed at the time of booking. Essentially, students wanting to follow this Intensive programme of learning should expect to allocate a minimum of 15 hours per week to the part-time course, and up to 30 hours per week for the full-time course.

The General English lessons

ELSL is open from 09.00 - 21.00, seven days a week, all year round. Typically, lessons are taught in blocks of three hour-long sessions (please see the time-slots below). Students can study part-time (6 hours per week), or full-time (15 hours per week). There is a minimum of two weeks of enrolment. There is no maximum amount of time that a student is required to study, although it is obviously beneficial to the development of the students English skills, to attend this course for the amount of time they need to become fully competent in the the language.

Students on the General English course will need to choose their lesson combinations from the timetable below:-

MORNING : 09.00 - 12.00
AFTERNOON : 12.00 - 15.00
LATE AFTERNOON : 15.00 - 18.00
EVENING : 18.00 - 21.00

This course is split into four categories:

A. Essential English

  • Grammar & Speaking
  • Vocabulary Building
  • Pronunciation & Listening
  • English in varying situations
B. English for Modern Life
  • British Life
  • Media, News & Opinions
  • Literature and the Arts
  • Film, Video & Drama
C. English for Work
  • Business
  • Practical Writing
  • Social & cultural English
D. English for Study
  • Study Techniques
  • English for Academic Purposes (speaking, listening, reading and writing)
  • Examination Techniques

The topics included on each course are shown in the boxes above. Within your chosen course you will cover a variety of topical issues, but you may not cover all of these. The availability of topics is dependent upon popular choice, language levels, course dates and the number of places available. We will advise you about this when you start.

Enrolment

Students wishing to enrol for the General English course, will need to identify the precise times that they wish to attend the school, and are required to attend a minimum of 2 lessons each week for five weeks. Students, enroled for more than this minimum, will be rewarded with a loyalty discount, appropriately reflecting the number of additional lessons selected.
