Why study BA(Hons) Interior Design?
Our BA(Hons) Interior Design is an exciting course that crosses the boundaries between art and design. Bringing together your creative flair and practical abilities, you will learn the skills required to begin employment in the interior design industry. You will become experienced in designing and making objects and surfaces for the interior spaces of private houses, public and corporate buildings, shops and retail environments, and those for theatre, film and television.
On graduation, you will have an impressive portfolio, real-world experience, problem-solving and project management skills, as well as the technical expertise needed for a successful career within your chosen field of interior design.

Interior Design is based at Bower Ashton Campus, part of the City Campus, where exceptional facilities and resources include state-of-the-art digital media studios, while production and fabrication workshops offer a combination of traditional tools and the latest technology.
You will examine the principles underlying space, detailing, finish, craft and digital processes and develop the conceptual ability and technical skills to design and make for both bespoke one-off projects and industrial production.
Guided and empowered to find your own path within the interior design industry, you will learn to view spaces differently and seek new design opportunities within them. You will build the skill base to transform your vision from concept to reality with a real understanding in materials, details and design theory.
Regular guest lectures and events will enable you to explore employment opportunities and you will exhibit your work at the University and at external venues.

About this course

Placements
We have strong links with industry across the region and beyond. In all three years, you will take Professional Practice and Work Experience modules where you will undertake work placements, internships and volunteering. Bristol theatres and hospitals, for example, offer real locations for our students to test their practice.
Study exchanges with European colleges of Art and Design are available as part of the EU-funded Erasmus/Socrates programme.
Fieldwork
Visits to industry, trade fairs and renowned interior locations take place during all three years.

Content

Year one

The first year introduces you to a range of concepts and applications needed to acquire a broad base of skills and understanding of Interior Design specialisms. You will be encouraged to explore the way in which ideas may be developed through a range of different media, research and processes.

Access to visiting speakers, along with the Professional Practice and Work Experience in Interior Design module, will enable you to begin to locate the context of your own practice in relation to developing knowledge of the possibilities for your future career trajectory.

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Introduction to Interior Design
  • Exploring Practice in Interior Design
  • Professional Practice and Work Experience in Interior Design
  • Critical Perspectives

Year two

You will focus on developing the relationship between form, content and the language of materials. You will look at the implications, techniques, manufacturing processes and design impacts between the bespoke and mass produced design markets. Further individual and team activity will enable you to refine your skills base, developing your project management skills through set projects and live briefs.

The Professional Practice and Work Experience module provides a series of structured lectures and events designed to help you explore your potential for employment. All students exhibit their work within UWE and at external locations. You will also be encouraged to undertake work placements.

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Developing Practice in Interior Design
  • Professional Practice and Work Experience in Interior Design 2
  • Creative Analysis

Plus one of the following optional modules:

  • International Exchange
  • Developing Practice in Interior Design 2

Final year

Your final year of study will consist of a self-directed programme of study to reflect your particular strengths, abilities and ambitions. It will be developed through a combination of critical discussion, contextual awareness, visual research and creative practice. You will investigate the impacts of space and place, enabling you to apply your own design methodologies and ethos to prepare you for industry. The year will culminate in the presentation of a substantial body of work.

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Preparation for Extended Study in Interior Design
  • Extended Study in Interior Design
  • Professional Practice and Work Experience in Interior Design 3
  • Independent Research Project

This structure is for the full-time course delivery only. For part-time delivery, the same modules will be studied over a longer period and the structure will differ.

The University continually enhances our offer by responding to feedback from our students and other stakeholders, ensuring the curriculum is kept up to date and our graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need for the real world. Learning and Teaching

The Interior Design course involves a rich and diverse set of experiences designed to stimulate your ability to learn as well as encouraging a high level of critical reflection. You will be expected to take part in workshops, projects, seminars, lectures and tutorials. You will engage with self and peer assessment and contribute meaningfully to your peer group.

Throughout the course, you will have access to experienced tutors and visiting professionals, who will discuss your work with you and offer support, guidance and suggestions on how to develop your portfolio of work in readiness for employment.

Visual Culture lectures and seminars will allow you to locate your practice within the context of art and design practices.

Assessment

A variety of assessment methods are used throughout the course, including essays, projects, group presentations and presentations of visual work. There are no exams. You will engage in written critical evaluation of your work where you are expected to critique and analyse your work and relate it to the broader context of design practice. Marks from modules at levels two and three can contribute towards your overall degree classification.
