Residential Design
Part time – one academic year
30 Monday evenings 6.30pm - 9.00pm & 6 Saturdays 10.00am - 4.00pm
This course will build on existing ability, practice the design process, add new methods and advanced skills, and introduce professional practice; at the end of the course students should be competent in managing the process from brief through design, communication and implementation.
The course is divided into three parts.
Term One: Detail Design
There are two projects in this term which help to develop detail design skills and to further understand the use of materials, detailing for construction, and the process of communicating with fabricators. Students are asked to write a brief for a storage unit and design the unit using model making, sketching and inspirational images. Drawing techniques are developed through exploring the detail in various scales into construction drawing. Detail design is further developed through the bathroom project and the object of the first term is to produce final design detail drawings which will include presentation techniques already learnt in the previous course. This set of drawings will be developed into a construction package during the next term
Term Two: Professional Practice
Following on from Term one the bathroom project is used to demonstrate the professional practice aspect to produce a working drawing package which would then be presented to a contractor for costing. During this process there will be a meeting with a construction company to discuss real issues of running a project and further talks on materials and interior detailing. During this term you will also learn how to draw on computer using Vectorworks, and students can choose whether to pursue this or continue with hand drawings. The third project is to design a pod at the bottom of the garden: as a studio, gym, workspace, teenage retreat etc. This project will be introduced in the middle of the term so that the brief and inspiration sketch book are developed ready to start the project in term three
Term Three: Pod Project
The pod project will use all the skills that have been learnt from brief and concept through to a sketch scheme that has been developed with the use of sketch detailing. The aim is to produce a clear set of drawings explaining the scheme with the use of appropriate 3D drawings and including key details. Throughout this term there will be talks on professional practices issues in accordance with the BIDA contract and code of conduct. The final portfolio of work will demonstrate the skills necessary for residential interior design.
