Interior Design Diploma

Full time - one academic year
Monday to Friday 10.00 am - 4.30 pm

Working with specialist tutors from within the Industry, we teach the skills needed to practice as a professional Interior Designer equipping each student with an exciting and professional portfolio of work.

No previous work or creative experience is required. Emphasis is placed on understanding the design process and developing an idea from client brief to presentation. This is taught through practical studio projects that introduce you to spatial and conceptual design issues and the skills that will allow you to develop your creative, technical and analytical abilities. To support the studio project work, it is essential to have an understanding of the methods of detailing, selecting materials, furniture and lighting that will give the schemes substance and meaning. This aspect of the course is continuously discussed and developed during the project work, and is supported by regular lectures on finishes and detailing, with visits to showrooms and suppliers.

The course is divided into three parts.

Part one introduces the design process and uses a residential project to concentrate on learning drawing skills and visual vocabulary required to design and present project work.

Part two develops these skills by examining new design issues relevant to commercial projects and introduces basic professional practice and computer aided drawing.

Part three focuses on the area of the profession you wish to work in and integrates the skills you have learnt into a final design project of your choice. This project develops in conjunction with careers advice and professional practice workshops. There is a final assessment that examines the year’s work followed by an end of year exhibition.

A work placement, in a practice suitable for each student's individual skills and professional interests, is arranged by the school and considered an integral part of the course. Past work placements have included United Designers, Morey Smith, etc Graduates at work

There is continuous assessment on projects throughout the course, with no grading or preferential awards. Each student comes to the course with different attributes and over the course they develop individual skills to produce a portfolio of work which demonstrates their speciality.

The course is intensive and is open to anyone who has the drive and ambition to succeed in this exciting world. Past students are employed in design offices around the world, as well as setting up their own practices.
