Course programme

Interior Design is about spaces and the needs of people who occupy them. Working in three dimensions, interior designers need to consider space allocation, building services, traffic flow, furniture, fixtures and surface finishes. They do not work solely on aesthetic elements, but they have to take into consideration the functional, social, safety and cultural aspects of the environment.

This intensive and comprehensive course will give you an understanding of the components involved in designing a domestic interior. It puts a strong focus on developing technical drawing skills, three dimensional thinking, space analysis and presentation techniques.

You will learn through a practical project supported by a series of lectures, workshops, demonstrations and individual feedback. The maximum number of students on the course is 12, which allows time for one-to-one advice.

Who should take this course?

The course is ideal for both beginners with a keen interest on the subject and those considering further study. It is also suitable for those interested in acquiring skills in order to refurbish their own living space.

Topics covered

  • Design context
  • Mood/concept boards
  • Ergonomics
  • Scale, line quality, weight and conventions
  • Space analyses, bubble and analytical diagrams
  • Three dimensional thinking and space planning
  • Historical references and interior development
  • Kitchen & bathroom design
  • Using a technical drawing board and associated tools
  • Orthographic projection (plan, sections, elevations and axonometrics)
  • Sketch model preparation and use
  • Hard & soft furnishing
  • Materials board
  • Inking & rendering techniques

This is not an interior styling or decorating course, and therefore it does not focus on current trends or fashions, but seeks to introduce students to a more comprehensive view of interior design.

Outcomes

The course offers an opportunity for students to develop technical drawing skills, learn how to draw from different 2D viewpoints and experiment with their ideas within the constraints of space and brief. You will produce 3D axonometric drawings and a sketch model.

By the end of the course you should understand better how to use different materials and the importance of explaining and presenting your work.

You will complete a design project from beginning (client) to end (presentation), produce a project for their design folio and be more confident to produce further interior schemes.
