These programmes cover a range of Animal Care skills and related practices. The main objectives of the courses are to ensure the development of practical skills, related background knowledge including health and safety issues and procedures. This is a practically based course aimed at developing the necessary skills and experience ideal for a grooming assistant, kennel worker, pet shop or animal nursing assistant working in the industry.

Entry Criteria

Entry onto the apprenticeship is subject to a thorough initial assessment to clarify course appropriateness. Entrants must have the ability to achieve Level 1 Functional Skills in English and Mathematics and be able to cope with the Level 2 vocational qualification. Apprentices must have a contract of employment working for a minimum for 30 hours/week.

Venue

Work Based blended delivery programme consisting predominantly of on-site training and assessment within the workplace, supported by off-site technical training at Myerscough College one day per week during term time. Course teaching, learning and assessment is enhanced through the effective use of e portfolio and distance learning resources to ensure flexible delivery is responsive to learner, employer and situational needs.

Progression: Apprentices successfully completing the Intermediate Apprenticeship have opportunities to progress within the industry by continuing onto the Advanced Apprenticeship in Animal Care or other Further Education courses.

Possible Careers/jobs Typical jobs apprentices will be able to progress onto on completion of the Intermediate Apprenticeship will depend on the qualifications and experience gained, but could include: zoo/animal keeper; dog groomer; animal/dog trainer; dog warden and animal management technician.
